New tool for sharing open educational resources

OER deposit tool

The 9th June UKOER (UK Open Education Resource) start-up meeting saw the delivery of the Jorum OER Deposit Tool, which was well received by the project participants of the OER programme, and has since been put to use. This provides a simple, effective and quick way to deposit OER materials prior to the January 2010 target launch date of JorumOpen, when all deposited content will automatically be made available as open content.

Materials deposited into Jorum for open access will need to have a Creative Commons licence attached to them.

The key feature of Creative Commons is that the depositor chooses the terms of licence for the material that is released as open educational content.

Anyone in the world will be able to search, browse, download and use open/CC licensed content via Jorum. The important issue for users who wish to download this content is that they respect the licence terms for each resource. In this respect all content is licensed!

Jorum will continue to provide means for sharing existing content, including materials with more restrictive terms of licence; for example, learning and teaching materials that use resources made available by JISC Collections to members of UK universities and colleges.

All open content deposited in Jorum will be exposed to search engines, providing a much broader landscape to search, find and share resources.

Open content from the UKOER Programme will carry the ‘ukoer' tag, so that content can be found and tracked more easily.
